The Night She Let Go

She lights a candle and presses play on “When You Say Nothing at All.”

The first notes float through the room. She smiles, not the sad kind, but the kind that comes after understanding. She whispers to the air:

“I release love with kindness and light.
If fate wants our paths to cross again,
I’ll be ready, calm, whole, shining.”

The flame flickers, reflecting off the windowpane like tiny fireflies. He might be somewhere across the island, perhaps looking out at the same rain, both of them silent under the same sky.

Then she closes her eyes and breathes, once for peace, once for gratitude, and once for herself.
Outside, the rain softens, and the city lights look just a little warmer.
